About the condition

What is Speech Development Delay?

Speech development delay means a child's speech lags behind age milestones: the vocabulary is poor, phrases do not appear, and the child communicates with gestures and sounds. If the other spheres — comprehension, play, attention, emotions — develop on schedule, the delay is isolated to speech. If mental development lags behind together with speech, it is a mixed speech-and-mental development delay: the child finds it harder to concentrate, hold attention, play by the rules, and understand requests. Distinguishing these conditions matters from the very start — it determines what the help program will consist of.

At Boya Hospital (Yuncheng, Shanxi Province), speech and mixed developmental delays are one of the core areas of pediatric neurological rehabilitation. The course is built as an intensive: 6–9 sessions a day, 6 days a week. The core of the program is speech therapy: understanding spoken language, eliciting first words, building up vocabulary and phrases. It is supported by Traditional Chinese Medicine methods: acupuncture stimulates the speech centers of the brain, scalp acupuncture (needling points on the head) is used to activate the speech areas, and pediatric Tui Na massage relaxes the muscles of the speech apparatus. The course is complemented by sensory integration, occupational therapy, pharmacopuncture, and apparatus-based physiotherapy — the doctor tailors the set to the individual child.

What to expect from the course

Every child has their own pace, and an honest specialist will not promise that a child will \"start talking by a date\". Effectiveness is higher in children under 7–8 — the speech areas of the brain are especially plastic at this age — but Boya also helps older children. The goal of the course is measured in concrete steps: a steady response to spoken language, first words, vocabulary growth, phrases, simple dialogue. The recommended length is 2–3 months: speech is built by daily repetition, not by isolated procedures.

How to start

Send us your child's documents — reports from a neurologist and a speech therapist, hearing test results, and other examinations if you have them. The hospital's doctor will review them and determine which sessions and procedures the program will consist of. The document-based consultation is free, and there is no prepayment: you pay on site and only for what your child has actually received.

Causes

Most often a combination of factors: complications of pregnancy and birth, immaturity of the speech areas of the brain, illnesses in early childhood. Hearing loss must always be ruled out: a child who hears poorly cannot start speaking on time. Sometimes a speech delay is the first visible sign of a broader developmental delay.

Symptoms

The vocabulary is noticeably poorer than in peers, phrases do not appear or appear very late, and the child communicates with gestures and sounds. In a mixed speech-and-mental delay, difficulties with attention, memory, play, and emotional reactions are added to the speech problems.

Diagnostics

Examination by a neurologist, a hearing check, and an assessment of speech comprehension and active vocabulary. The developmental level is clarified with specialized scales (PEP, S-S, the Gesell scale) — the program is built from the child's actual level, not from the age in the passport.

Prognosis and rehabilitation approach

Speech can be developed: regular sessions build up comprehension, vocabulary, and phrases step by step. Effectiveness is higher in children under 7–8, but Boya also helps older children — the program starts from the child's current level.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a core traditional Chinese medicine method within the centre's programme. Very fine needles are placed at active points on the head, back, body and abdomen; in children's rehabilitation it complements physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.

Herbal Compresses

Herbal compresses are a TCM method: a pouch filled with a special blend of medicinal herbs is warmed and applied to areas of tension or acupuncture points. The heat and active herbal components help relax the muscles, improve local circulation and ease discomfort.

Tuina Massage

Tuina (推拿) is an ancient form of Chinese therapeutic massage: pressing, rubbing, stretching and kneading of points linked to the meridians. In children's rehabilitation it helps release spastic muscles, improve circulation and reduce anxiety.

Pharmacopuncture (Acupoint Injections)

Pharmacopuncture (acupoint injections) combines the principles of traditional Chinese medicine with modern pharmacology: micro-doses of medication are injected into biologically active points. The medication stays at the point longer, so the effects of acupuncture and the drug combine and last longer.

Apparatus physiotherapy complements physical and occupational therapy: currents of different frequencies, cerebellar stimulation and UHF help work with muscle tone, support weakened muscles and improve local circulation. The set of procedures and their settings are chosen by a doctor.

Sensory Integration

Sensory integration is the neurological process by which the brain organises and interprets signals from the senses. Training helps a child process that information more accurately: sessions run through play — on swings, trampolines, balance equipment and with tactile materials.
