Child rehabilitation in China: Boya Hospital
To give a child with movement or speech difficulties a clear rehabilitation programme — and the family calm conditions to see it through.
A hospital built on Yuncheng First Hospital
Boya Hospital (运城博雅医院) is located in Yuncheng, a city in the south of Shanxi Province next to the Yuncheng Salt Lake. It is a private Level 2 general hospital. The departments that matter most for rehabilitation are neurology, pediatrics, orthopedics, rehabilitation and traditional Chinese medicine, backed by an in-house laboratory and imaging: MRI, EEG and video-EEG monitoring, ultrasound, ECG and X-ray.
The hospital remains a general one: it also runs cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, surgery and other departments, so related tests and consultations take place in the same building, with no transfers.
The hospital grew out of the South Branch of Yuncheng First Hospital: the buildings, the equipment and most of the doctors stayed the same. In October 2023 Boya received its own medical licence and began operating as an independent institution.
Pediatric rehabilitation is led by rehabilitation specialist Liu Jinchuan, neurology by Huang Aifang, and traditional Chinese medicine by Bi Tao, the sixth generation of a family school. The hospital admits international families: it helps with the invitation letter and documents, and an interpreter is present at appointments and sessions.

The philosophy of the hospital
We combine Western and traditional Chinese medicine: a neurologist, a rehabilitation specialist and a Chinese medicine doctor work with the child together. The course is built around your child's condition rather than handed out as a standard package. You stay alongside during sessions and see what the day is made of.
What the rehabilitation department works with
Movement rehabilitation in cerebral palsy
Work with movement disorders: postural control, weight bearing, walking and fine motor skills. The programme is built from physical therapy, occupational therapy and instrument-based physiotherapy.
Autism, speech and developmental delay
Sessions focused on speech, communication and sensory processing: speech therapy, sensory integration, behaviour and everyday skills.
TCM support during the course
Acupuncture, tui na massage, herbal therapy and moxibustion — as an addition to the core programme and only when prescribed by a doctor.
What matters to us
An individual programme
The doctor defines the course after examining the child in person, not from a price list.
Payment on site
No prepayment before arrival: treatment is paid for on site, after admission and the initial examination.
TCM and Western medicine
A rehabilitation specialist, a neurologist and a traditional Chinese medicine doctor work with the child as one team.
Flexible length of stay
The family chooses how long to stay: the doctor recommends an optimal length but does not impose it.
The family stays close
The parent is present during sessions, and we help find housing 50–300 metres from the hospital.

What a child's day looks like
Session length by type
Example of one day
A 4–5-year-old child with cerebral palsy on the standard programme
Homework
Besides the procedures there is homework too: the specialist shows exercises that the parent repeats with the child between sessions and continues at home.
Initial assessment
The initial examination takes place on the day of admission. Within the first 3–7 days, PT, OT and speech therapy specialists carry out an assessment using the GMFM-88 and FMFM scales, which records the starting point for the programme.

What the work is built on
Continuity with Yuncheng First Hospital
The hospital grew out of the South Branch of Yuncheng First Hospital and kept the clinical facilities, the equipment and most of the medical team.
Growth of the rehabilitation department
Since 2023 rehabilitation has been a department of its own: a children's exercise therapy hall, physiotherapy and acupuncture rooms and a dedicated nursing station.
