Herbal Compresses
Herbal compresses are a TCM method: a pouch filled with a special blend of medicinal herbs is warmed and applied to areas of tension or acupuncture points. The heat and active herbal components help relax the muscles, improve local circulation and ease discomfort.

How the procedure works
Herbal compresses (warmed herbal pouches) are a traditional Chinese medicine method: a pouch filled with a special blend of medicinal herbs is warmed and applied to specific areas of the body or acupuncture points. In children's rehabilitation the method is used as a supportive procedure — to relax the muscles, improve local circulation and support the child's overall wellbeing.
How it works
- Heat. The hot steam from the pouch dilates the capillaries and improves local circulation — more oxygen and nutrients reach the tissues, which supports recovery processes.
- The energy Qi. According to TCM, warmth helps restore the balance of Qi and blood, dispelling "cold" and excess "dampness". Qi is the vital energy circulating through the meridians, the body's energy channels.
- Active components. Under the effect of heat and gentle pressure, the active components of the herbs penetrate the skin and underlying tissues, producing a local effect.
In practical terms this translates into reduced muscle spasms and swelling, better joint mobility and a gentle soothing effect.
Why the method suits children
- Local action. The active components work directly in the application area — the systemic load on the body is minimal, which matters especially in children's rehabilitation.
- Gentleness. The procedure is non-invasive and comfortable: most children experience the warm pouches as pleasant warmth and relax well.
- Compatibility. The compresses complement massage, physical therapy and other sessions: relaxed muscles respond better to the specialists' work.
Within the rehabilitation programme
In cerebral palsy warm compresses are used to relax spastic muscles, reduce spasms and prepare the muscles for physical therapy and massage. In ASD and speech and psycho-speech delay the procedure serves as a gentle relaxing method within the programme — warmth helps lower overall tension. The application areas and duration of each procedure are determined by the specialist.
What the pouches contain
The pouches are made from natural components: medicinal herbs, seeds and plant extracts. The exact composition of the blend is selected by a doctor specialising in TCM — individually, depending on the child's condition and the goals of the programme.
What parents should know
The pouch is heated to around 50°C but is applied only once the temperature is comfortable — the specialist always monitors the heat to rule out burns. Before the method is used a doctor examines the child, rules out contraindications and defines the compresses' place in the overall programme. Herbal compresses do not replace sessions with rehabilitation specialists — they are a supportive procedure.
