About the condition

What is Enuresis?

Enuresis is involuntary urination in a child over 4–5 years old, most often at night. Before that age, wet nights are a normal stage of development and it is too early to speak of a diagnosis. Sometimes the picture is a daytime one: frequent urges with small volumes and sudden urgent urges, when the child simply does not make it to the toilet. The causes vary — slower maturing of the systems responsible for night-time control, heredity, very deep sleep, anxiety, and changes in life. Urological causes are less common, but the doctor at home should rule them out before the trip.

It is worth saying plainly: enuresis is not laziness, not misbehavior, and not a question of parenting. The child does not do it on purpose and cannot stop it by willpower, while remarks and punishment only add anxiety — and usually make things worse.

Boya Hospital (Yuncheng, Shanxi Province) specializes in pediatric neurological rehabilitation, and enuresis is most often addressed here as a secondary task within the overall program. The work uses Traditional Chinese Medicine methods: pediatric Tui Na massage and moxotherapy — gentle warming of active points with mugwort — and acupuncture when prescribed by the doctor. Special attention goes to the general background — sleep and tension levels — because fatigue and anxiety noticeably increase night-time episodes.

How to start

Send us your child's documents — reports from the pediatrician and neurologist, urological test results if any were done, and a list of the medications your child takes. The hospital's doctor will review them and explain what can be done within the program and what remains the responsibility of the doctor at home. The document-based consultation is free, and there is no prepayment: you pay on site and only for the procedures actually received.

Causes

Most often the systems responsible for night-time control simply mature more slowly than in peers; heredity and very deep sleep also play a role. Anxiety and changes in the child's life make the picture worse. Less often the cause is urological — that is ruled out by the doctor at home.

Symptoms

A child over 4–5 years old regularly wakes up wet. Sometimes a daytime picture is added: frequent urges with small volumes, sudden urgent urges, and the child not making it to the toilet in time. Embarrassment and reluctance to sleep away from home often come with it.

Diagnostics

The first step is an examination by the pediatrician at home and, if indicated, a urologist's consultation with ultrasound to rule out an organic cause. A simple diary helps: when and how much the child drinks, how often they go to the toilet, and on which nights episodes occur.

Prognosis and rehabilitation approach

In most children, night-time control develops with age. The goal is not to "speed it up at any cost" but to reduce tension and support the maturing of control. The key condition for success is at home: the child is never shamed or punished for a wet bed.
